This article contains a summary of a Ph.D Thesis, which presents new perspectives in the study of functional recovery after stroke. In order to cope with the heterogeneity of the stroke population, a strong case is made for the use of controlled single case experimental design. This alternative methodology is then applied to studying differences in treatment effects between neurodevelopmental treatment and the Brunnstrom-method, as well as the generalization of perception training to activities of daily living for patients with visual inattention.
