Although there are no specific biological markers of chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathies (CIDP), biological investigations have played an important role in determining the limits of the concept of CIDP.
This is best exemplified by the individualisation of demyelinating neuropathies associated with IgM monoclonal proteins reacting with glycolipids. The signification of CIDP associated with diabetes mellitus, monoclonal IgG or IgA, or mutations of myelin proteins has recently been discussed as they may have implications in our understanding of the pathophysiology of CIDP and raise the question of knowing whether they confer to CIDP a particular clinical presentation or evolution.
