This article covers a broad scope of topics, starting with the basics of orthotic classification and design. A review of the normal gait cycle is followed by a discussion of biomechanical considerations at the ankle, knee, and hip. Orthotic design and function including material and biomechanical considerations are also highlighted, along with gait deviations commonly seen in individuals with both lower motor neuron and upper motor neuron disorders.
