Personal data on 97 amputees, ranging in age between 15 and 70, anamneses, a shortened form of the Freiburg Personality Inventory (FPI) and a special amputee questionnaire were assessed. A specific medical examination was also carried out on 61 of the 97 patients. The evaluation was performed at random,i.e., in order of admittance to the hospital. The overall results were surprisingly positive. The data on the amputees were largely within the norms of the FPI, as far as its evaluation areas are concerned . Furthermore the majority of the respondents felt integrated in an accepted by society. Also, their general attitude was active and positive towards life and the future. They appraised most highly the functional and aesthetic values of prostheses.
