Three major complications of anterior cruciate ligament surgery are discussed in this article : ankylosis, posterolateral instability, and medial subluxation of the patella. The author suggests that the solution to many complications of anterior cruciate ligament surgery seems to be increasing the surgeon's knowledge of the complex anatomy of the anterior cruciate ligament and of the surgical techniques used in its reconstruction.
