Many established concepts regarding the tolerance of skeletal muscle to ischemia have been based on tourniquet studies. Our data demonstrate that these concepts are not applicable to ischemia produced by an acute high-pressure compartment syndrome. Elevated tissue pressure appears to act synergistically with ischemia to produce more severe cellular deterioration than does ischemia alone.
