Seventy-three musicians with upper-extremity musculoskeletal disorders were seen in the authors' hand clinic from 1982 to 1990. These patients were surveved to determine their treatment outcome and their opinions of the various treatment modalities they had used Outcome was based on the number of hours per week of playing time after treatment versus hours per week before the disability. Opinions regarding treatment were correlated with individual outcome. the outcome of musicians treated with rest and gradual return to play was compared with the outcome of musicians treated with work-hardening exercises.
