A study was conducted to measure arm and shoulder strength in three through six year old children with unilateral congenital below-elbow limb deficiencies to determine how much power they have available for operating a body powered terminal device. In fourteen children, strength on both the limb deficient and sound sides fell considerably below published standards for shoulder flexion and abducation. The pilot study led to another investigation to measure strength in a larger number of children, to gather additional normative strength data on young children's arm and shoulder girdle motions, and to measure the effect of an intervention to increase strength.
