Acute and chronic lateral ligament injuries of the ankle represent a common but persistent problem to orthopedic specialists. A comprehensive physical examination and classification system were proposed as an approach to this problem. Guidelines for both conservative and surgical management for acute and chronic injuries are described.
A comparison of the most common lateral ligament repairs is provided, with emphasis on the benefits of the so-called anatomic repair.
