In this article, the authors discuss the way orthoses activate sensomotorical effects by stimulating a great number of mechanoreceptors through well-directed pressure reinforcement. Besides the pain-dampening effect of this mechanostimulation, which is produced through the gate-control mechanism (counter-irritating principle), according to the results of the present study, additional economising effects on the activated muscles are possible, which can be used for therapy.
