This article discusses the use of prostheses in general and more specifically what can be done for the patient with injuries through the hand and carpal region. Although the article is titled Functional prostheses, the author focuses on actively controlled devices. Rationale is made for ""optimum"" amputation levels and prescription recommendations. Finally, examples of prosthetic designs and fitting strategies are presented
