Carpal tunnel syndrome in the working population poses a unique challenge for physicians. Physicians need to be able to accurately diagnose this problem as well as ascertain possible work-relatedness, based on science rather than opinion or ergonomics. Patients should be informed of all risks and complications of surgery and understand that returning to work is an important part of recovery. Finally, the physicians should avoid leading a patient to believe that he or she will be permanently disabled from carpal tunnel syndrome.
