The future : surgery of the spinal cord ?

BRUNELLI GA
HAND CLIN , 2002, vol. 18, n° 3, p. 541-546
Doc n°: 107706
Localisation : Documentation IRR
Descripteurs : AE12 - PATHOLOGIQUE

Complete spinal cord lesions do not heal. Healing would require (1) regeneration of the severed axons, (2) their progression into the cord up to their previous target cells, and (3) the formation of new functional connections. Motor axons must regenerate beyond the injury site and reinnervate the peripheral motor neurons, whereas sensory axons must regenerate from the cord (below the lesion) up to brain. The spinal cord, as with the rest of the central nervous system (CNS) is does not permit the progression of regrowing axons; however, peripheral nerves do.
