The rehabilitation process following anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) surgery has changed considerably in the past decade. Presently, the rehabilitation program emphasizes immediate motion, muscular training, proprioception, dynamic stability, and neuromuscular control. The purpose of this article is to provide the reader with a thorough basis for ACL rehabilitation based on graft selection and concomitant injuries. The rehabilitation program should be based on scientific and clinical research and should focus on specific drills and exercises designed to return the patient/athlete to their desired functional goals. Unique rehabilitation techniques for the female athlete will also be discussed.
