In summary, resurfacing hip replacement is an appealing option for bone preservation in the younger patient. In the current study of a metal-on-metal resurfacing design, cemented fixation of the acetabular component was inadequate. Although this may be design related, the early failures, including some on the femoral side, raise concern about the potentially deleterious effects of a large articulation and possibly increased frictional torque.
These findings emphasize the importance of randomized clinical trials in evaluating this type of new technology. © 2005 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
