Total wrist arthroplasty preserves motion and enhances hand function for daily tasks and lower-demand vocational and avocational activities. It is often preferable to fusion when both wrists are arthritic. Newer prosthetic designs provide a functional range of motion, better wrist balance, reduced risk of loosening, and better implant stability than older designs. The success of total wrist arthroplasty depends on appropriate patient selection, careful preoperative planning, and sound surgical technique. This article discusses the history, technique, and outcomes of total wrist arthroplasty, with emphasis on new implant designs and strategies to minimize risks and manage complications.
