Two hundred seventy-two patients were assessed regarding their response to risk-factor modification advice over the course of one year after an episode of acute coronary heart disease. Patients received advice while in the hospital regarding cigarette-smoking cessation, leisure-exercise increase, and weight reduction. At the three-week, three-month, six-month, and one-year follow-up visits, patients were interviewed with respect to smoking and exercise habits and weight. Also assessed was the relationship between response to advice and social and demographic variables, including education, occupation, sex, age and domicile.
