The aim of the study described in this article was to establish a generally acceptable method for the characterisation of different foot types based on their dynamic foot print during walking. For this reason a pedrograph was installed in the middle of a 10 m walkway. For the assessment the contact zone in the mid area of the foot in relation to the whole contact area excluding the toes was used. The measured values were defined as "contact area ratio" (CAR). After the tests on 20 healthy subjects it turned out that due to the extremely small standard deviation this contact area ratio is a helpful means to quantify the shape of the foot sole of different individuals
