The correction of sport shoes for athletes with pain in the musculo-skeletal system has been based on the empirical knowledge of the orthopaedic surgeon. The goal of this study was to understand the biomechanical effects of sport shoes and sport shoe corrections. It was considered especially important to determine the difference in the characteristics of the pattern of human gait in walking and running for subjects with and without pain. Eighty four subjects were used in the study which included a medical examination cinematography and force plate measurements. The results are subdivided into two groups, the effects of pain and the effects of shoes and shoe corrections. It was found that the angle of the leg alpha, the angle of the Achilles tendon Beta, the co-efficient of stability of the Achilles tendon and of the calcaneus, the point of application of the force in the antero-posterior direction kx and the vertical force Fz showed some significant differences between subjects with and without pain. The difference between shoes and barefoot was described by significant differences in the angle of the Achilles tendon Beta, the angle of the calcaneus y, the angle of take-off, the stability coefficient of the Achilles tendon and the calcaneus, the point of application of the force Kx and the vertical force Fz. The results of this quantitative analysis facilitates the understanding of what occurs when a person walks or runs in sport shoes. It is shown that helpful information can be given to the orthopaedic surgeon concerning the use of sport shoe correction.
