Fifty amputation patients, primarly elderly, were interviewed on admission to, and discharge from, an amputee rehabilitation unit. The patients were found to experience regular stages of psychological reaction to amputation. The authors draw several implications for intervention, including the need for realistic communication, provision of emotional and peer support at time when patients are receptive to such help, and attention to practical concerns of the amputee.
