Comparison of functional results of replantation versus prosthesis in a patient with bilateral arm amputation

CLIN ORTHOP RELAT RES , 1987, n° 214, p. 153-159 Doc n°: 31362 Localisation : Documentation IRR Descripteurs : EB21 - BRAS - EPAULE - AMPUTATION DU MEMBRE SUPERIEUR Function was evaluated in a 12-year-old girl who had traumatic, bilateral proximal humeral amputation at seven years of age. Unilateral successful replantation was performed with subsequent nerve grafts and tendon transfers to improve function. The contralateral side was fitted early after amputation with a body-powered prosthesis. Subjectively, the patient preferred the replanted side for activities of daily living. The range of motion and strength was better overall on the replanted side. Sensory return, although poor when compared with a normal hand, allowed the patient when blindfolded to identify objects placed in the hand. The replanted arm offers better function than the prosthesis for most activities. Langue : ANGLAIS Identifiant basis : 1987000697 |
