Studies generally show a 1% to 2% decline per year in physical work capacity (PWC) with increasing age. Thirteen men, mean age 63 years (range, 50-74 years), were followed up for 18 years. Exercise averaged 3.3 days/wk using approximately 700 kcal/session. The modes of training included swimming, walking, running and cycling.
The results do not show any significant change during the 18 years in height, percent body fat, or resting blood pressure. Heart rate at rest declined nine beats, from 63 to 54 beats/min (P<.05). Maximal oxygen uptake remained relatively constant from the initial exam (44.6 ml/kg/min) until 18 years later (43.1 ml/kg/min). It was concluded that the usual decline in PWC seen with advancing age may be altered by habitual physical activity.
