Mechanical and clinical trials have been performed on a new design of femoral fracture brace, the Protectair hinge system. The hinge, constructed from polythene, aluminium, stainless steel and nylon, incorporates some novel features. Pre-bent hinge arms, detachable headplates and a unique knee joint mechanism. Mechanical tests under various stress states have shown the hinge to be of sufficient strength. Biomechanical tests on volunteer subjects have indicated that the unique combination of good knee flexion and prevention of knee hyperextension will be of clinical value.
