Only a few vessels reach the adult femoral head on its anterior aspect, suggesting that surgical procedures on the anterior femoral head and neck can be safely performed by open and closed techniques (arthroscopy). Caution should be used, however, when approaching the anterolateral and posterolateral head and neck junction. The anatomic course of the deep branch of the medial circumflex artery should also be respected if a blood-sparing approach to femoral head resurfacing arthroplasty is contemplated, but it is still not known whether long-term survival of the femoral component is affected by the quality of the remaining femoral head and neck blood supply. © 2005 Elsevier Inc.
